Exploring Pattern: Henri Matisse

Most of us are familiar with Matisse’s bright-coloured collages but his lesser known monoprints are calmer and effortlessly fluid. In this artist-inspired session, printmaker Rachel Moore take us through a series of exercises, experimenting with shape, line and colour, fusing together Matisse’s collage and monoprints.

Prepare your materials and find a sturdy table or floor to work on.

Play video
  • 3 x A4/A5 sheets of cartridge paper or card
  • Scrap paper for inking up and to make test prints
  • Scissors
  • A variety of plain, patterned and coloured papers
  • PVA glue and applicator
  • Leaves and other objects to make texture (optional)
  • Pencil
  • Tracing paper
  • Block printing ink in your choice of colours – Rachel recommends having at least two colours with you
  • An A4 size piece of acrylic plastic, Perspex, acetate or similar
  • Rubber roller (brayer) for printmaking.
