Whether you’re an expert gardener or a complete novice, cut-and-come again salads are a great way to start the growing year. You can do this even if you don’t have a garden - a bright windowsill is all you need to grow and eat your own salads. Keen gardener and Virtual Village Hall print artist, Rachel Moore, shows us how.

Preparation

Prepare your materials.

One of the following:

  • A purpose bought seed tray
  • A 9” plant pot
  • A clean food container with drainage holes made in the base or a similarly suitable container

Peat free seed sowing compost:

  • Lettuce seeds - suggested varieties include lettuce ‘salad bowl’ and ‘salad bowl mixed’ or any variety labelled ‘cut-and-come-again’
  • Plant labels and marker
  • Watering can with a fine rose (sprinkler) attachment.
