Black History Month Walk Through Handsworth Park - Explore Birmingham's Black Heritage

Host: Black Heritage Walks Network

Join the Black Heritage Walks Network (BHWN) for a special Black Heritage Walk in Handsworth Park, Birmingham.

This event is part of our Black History Month programme and is all about celebrating history, culture, and community. Handsworth Park is one of Birmingham’s favourite green spaces and is a lively spot that reflects the city’s multicultural roots. The park holds a special place for the Caribbean community, many of whom made Handsworth their home after arriving in Britain after the Second World War, including those who came on the SS Empire Windrush.

During this guided walk, you’ll learn how Handsworth Park has become a symbol of resilience, creativity, and unity. You’ll explore the arts trail and see colourful murals that celebrate local heritage, and hear stories about events like the Simmer Down Festival and the historic Handsworth Carnival, which have made the park a centre for cultural pride. The walk also takes in landmarks like the Handsworth Cricket Club, a big part of local sports and social life, and the bandstand, where people have come together for music, activism, and celebration over the years.
