Get Involved in the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme

Host: Henrietta Pringle, National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme Project co-ordinator, People’s Trust for Endangered Species

Hedgehogs are one of the nation’s best-loved mammals but are currently listed as Vulnerable to Extinction, having declined by up to 75% in recent decades. In this session, Henrietta Pringle from People’s Trust for Endangered Species tells us all about the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme (NHMP), a new national hedgehog survey that members of the public can get involved in from the comfort of their own home.

During this session, Henrietta Pringle explains the reasons for the programme’s implementation and its innovative use of technology. The programme relies on volunteers to look through photos collected from the survey and spot any signs of hedgehogs. Henrietta will describe how to get involved in this ground-breaking project.

About the NHMP

Henrietta Pringle from PTES, is a PhD and wildlife data researcher with a passion for citizen science and innovative research.

The NHMP is a new survey led by two wildlife charities, People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS).

To be able to conserve species, we need to know where and why they are declining in order to put targeted conservation measures in place.

For the first time, the programme will produce hedgehog population estimates. The programme will allow conservationists to track hedgehog numbers and identify areas where they are struggling.
