The Allotment Diaries Part 8: Sowing Tender Vegetables and Greenhouse Preparation

Tutor: Rachel Moore, print artist

Join Rachel for the eighth instalment of her Allotment Diaries series!

Join keen gardener, grower and resident VVH print maker and artist, Rachel Moore, for the latest instalment in her Allotment Diaries series. In this episode, it’s time to sow the tender vegetables which come from hotter climates and need a long growing season. Chillies, aubergines and some tomatoes can be started off now, but they need extra protection from the wet and cold.

Rachel shows how to start them off, tidies and sorts out the greenhouse and shares some handy storage tips. Plus the dahlia bulbs have arrived! It’s not planting out time just yet but with a little extra time and care spent now, she’ll get strong, early blooms later in the year. This video was recorded in February 2025.

In the Allotment Diaries series, join Rachel throughout the year as she shares tips for growing your own produce, along with the successes and challenges she faces each season. You’ll gain insight into what happens on an allotment, the unusual vegetables she's growing, and the wildlife that visits.
As Rachel says: “Don’t expect pristine produce or immaculately weeded, straight rows of veg!”
