Q&A with the Bird Handlers Behind H is for Hawk

Guests: Lloyd and Rose Buck, bird behaviourists and handlers

Join Lloyd and Rose Buck, the acclaimed bird behaviourists and handlers. Lloyd leads the discussion throughout the session, with Rose joining later alongside Lottie for a special appearance.

Amongst Lloyd and Rose’s family of birds is a stunning goshawk called Lottie who stars in the brand-new Lionsgate film, H is for Hawk, which opened on 23rd January.

In the session, we discuss:

  • What a bird handler does
  • Lottie the goshawk and goshawks in the wild
  • How Claire Foy got to know Lottie on set
  • How other birds from the Bucks’ team record spectacular TV footage
  • Whether AI could impact the work of live animals and birds in filmmaking.

About H is for Hawk

The film is based on the memoir by Helen Macdonald, a Cambridge natural historian, author and keen bird watcher, whose life is thrown off course after the death of her beloved father. Lost in grief and in memories of time spent in nature with her father, Helen (played by Claire Foy) makes a bold plan to train and tame a goshawk, the most fearsome of hawks. That journey is complex and Helen discovers that death, life and love are inextricably linked.
