Join craft tutor Gemma as she demonstrates the art of sashiko, a decorative stitching style from Japan. Gemma explains how to use sashiko designs to decorate bags and other fabric that you might have at home.

Prep: prepare your materials and clear a space to work

Materials and equipment you'll need to take part:

  • Grid paper or a piece of paper with a grid marked on
  • A pencil
  • A ruler
  • Something circular to draw round, ideally 6cm
  • Fabric chalk
  • Some fabric or a plain tote bag
  • Sashiko thread or embroidery thread
  • Long needle
