Tutor: Katherine, textile designer, artist and tutor  

Crewelwork or Jacobean embroidery is a historic embroidery technique using wool. It is traditionally associated with the 16th and 17th Centuries but stems from as early as Saxon times. In this 35 minute session, embroidery tutor Katherine explains the history of crewelwork and shows how to sew a selection of traditional stitches used to create a crewelwork sampler. 

Prep: gather your materials and equipment

Video time: 35 minutes (allow for additional time to pause the video to follow the instructions or to try out a technique)

What you need to take part:

• Linen or other strong material with a close weave such as cotton
• Embroidery thread or 2ply wool
• A frame such as an embroidery hoop
• Pen/pencil
• An embroidery thread needle
