Cheers for Volunteers! on Thank You Day

Lead by Ross Kemp, TV actor and documentary maker

Volunteers have been the backbone of Britain during the pandemic. They have always played a pivotal role in society but never more so than over the last year. An incredible 12.4 million people stepped forward to volunteer during COVID-19 – and they continue to do so.

Among them is an army of Royal Voluntary Service volunteers who have made a vital contribution, making hundreds of thousands of welfare and companionship phone calls, essential grocery and prescription deliveries, distributed emergency food packs, delivered activity packs to people living with dementia, made garden gate visits, delivered library books and accompanied clients on walks.

Although lockdown restrictions have eased, the volunteer effort continues to be vital during the COVID  recovery period and beyond.

Volunteer champion and TV star, Ross Kemp, joined us here LIVE at the Virtual Village Hall on 4th July. Ross has spent the last few months helping a range of charities and filmed the documentary, Britain’s Volunteer Army, at the start of the pandemic.

Ross hosted a quick quiz before counting us down to the big moment when he invited the UK to raise a glass or mug to say Cheers for Volunteers – a mass thank you to the volunteers who have helped us through the pandemic.

Cheers for Volunteers at 5pm on Sunday 4 July was part of National Thank You Day (#ThankYouDay), a special day to thank the many people who have helped us get through the last twelve months.
